State Testing Update (STAR/ CST)

On May 1st,  2nd-5th graders begin STAR Testing.  It is extremely important that students come to school every day ready to test.  The California Standards Test (CST) is criterion-referenced, which means that any student can achieve at a proficient level if he/she has learned the skills.  The level of proficiency is around 70%, depending on the subject and grade level tested.  The students are tested in Reading, Language Arts, and Math.   Fifth grade also takes a science test.

These tests are very important because how we are judged as a whole school is dependent upon this one group of tests.  However, it is important to keep it all in perspective.  It is very much like taking pictures on vacation.  Just as the snapshot is just a small part of the entire view, this testing also shows just a small part of what children have learned and can do.  Teachers have worked hard with students to prepare them so that they will not be anxious about the tests and can do well.

Here's what parents can do to help:

  • Have your child at school on time every test day.
  • Provide a good breakfast with more protein, less sugar.
  • Help your child go to bed at a reasonable time.
  • Encourage your child to work carefully through each test question and check his/her answers.
  • Let your child get some exercise after school.
  • Exhibit a positive attitude about testing.

With your help, we can ensure that students have a successful testing experience.

If you are interested in serving as a proctor for the STAR tests, please contact me in the office -

(909) 971-8206.  I need parents to help monitor students during testing.  Help every day or only on the days you can - May 1 - 9th, 8:30 - 10:30 AM.
