Principal's Message

The school year is winding down and we have accomplished a lot this year at Grace Miller.  Looking ahead to summer and what's new on the horizon:

Ø  Virtual Summer School Opportunity - Do you want to give your kids something to do during the summer that helps maintain their academic skills but is also fun and engaging?  Consider ordering a software package from Voyager Learning that is a summer extension of a program we have here at Grace Miller.  There are three programs available: 1) Ticket to Read;  2) VMath;  3) Vocab Journey.  Each program license is $35 or is $90 for a bundle of all three.  See the flyer coming home with this Newsette for details.  Make sure you affiliate with Grace Miller School when you order, because we earn points towards products for our school when you select "affiliate" with our school.  Call the school office if you have questions.

Summer Reading Journey - With the report card, you will receive a Summer Reading Olympics calendar for students in grades K-4.  You'll also be given your child's reading range target.  There are three common  leveling systems  that most book companies use - Guided Reading (A-Z), Grade Equivalent (GE), or Lexile levels.  With the report card, you'll find your child's library card which will include all three of these leveling systems.  When you visit our school library, you'll see colored dots on the books that match the colors on the library card.  Please help your child select books at his/her level or ZPD so that he/she can grow as a reader.  See the back of this Newsette for more information on our Summer Reading Olympics.

NEW FOR NEXT YEAR:

Online Registration -  Tired of filling out all of the forms the first week of school?  Well, this coming school year, most of the forms will be online.  In July, we will send home a letter with your registration log in information.  It is important that you complete the registration  BEFORE SCHOOL STARTS  in order for your child to be placed in a class.  Please watch for your letter from the school so you can complete the forms. You can use the computer lab at school on Friday mornings10 AM - 12 noon through August 10th if needed.

Reading Fever will have some new requirements next year.  We want students to read more at higher levels and most importantly, we want them to understand what they are reading.  Watch for details in the fall.

And that's just the beginning!  We have much more in store for our students and families next year.  Have a great, safe summer!

Free money for summer saving!

Continue to save Box Tops and Campbell's Soup labels this summer.  Have your children bring them in to put in the containers in their new classrooms in the fall.  Register and swipe your Von's and Target cards. We'll get a head start for next year!  Think what we can accomplish if we just do a few simple things!

The new PTA Board is looking for much needed assistance in coordinating all of the programs that we have planned for next year, so think about how you could help.  We'd like to see every parent involved in some way - large or small.

We appreciate the time and efforts of the PTA Board this year.  They did an outstanding job!  We will miss the parents of our Fifth Grade students who are "graduating" from Grace Miller and who worked to make Grace Miller School a better place.  Thank you for your contributions!

Heartfelt Thanks to Our Retiree, Mrs. Chimako Matsukiyo

We would like to express appreciation to a wonderful person who is retiring from Grace Miller School this year - - Chimako Matsukiyo.  Ms. Chi, as she is known by the kids, has worked in Bonita Unified for 25 years and has been a Day Care worker at Grace Miller for 3 years.  Thank you, Ms. Chi, from the bottom of our hearts for your years of dedicated service to kids!

PTA Reflections Head-start

If you'd like to get a head-start on your entry for the PTA Reflections contest for next fall, the theme is:

"THE MAGIC OF THE MOMENT. . ."

You can spend your summer drawing, painting, writing, taking photographs, composing music, or creating a dance that "reflects" your concept of the theme.    ENJOY!
