WHAT IF . . . Emergency . . . . FIRE!!!

During a fire:  In the event of a fire, (or even in the event that smoke is evident anywhere on

campus) an ear-piercing fire alarm will sound.  (The fire alarm automatically sends a signal to the La Verne Fire Department, Police Department and District Office.)  Students and staff will quickly grab the red emergency backpacks next to the door and exit the rooms.  They will evacuate by following the route to the line-up area which is away from buildings.

Once the class is outside, the teacher has the first student in line hold up a green, yellow, or red card.  Green means everyone is safe and accounted for.  Yellow means that everyone is accounted for but there is a need to be addressed with that class.  Red means that immediate assistance is required and there are people missing from that class.

After successfully evacuating, staff members immediately report to duty stations.  Some staff members are in charge of the students and some take on responsibilities for things like Incident Command, First Aid, Search and Rescue, Communications, Student Release, Campus Security, Supplies , Utilities shut-off, etc.

Check-out Procedures:  Understandably, parents will be concerned about the safety of their children during and following a fire.  It is very important that everyone remains calm so that we can maintain orderly operations, and to keep from upsetting the children by seeing adults in panic mode. It is critical that parents and those on emergency cards follow the procedures below for an orderly release of students:

  • Those picking up children will report to the Release Table in an area designated by emergency responders. They will determine the safest way to release students to parents or others on the emergency cards.
  • Students will only be released to a person on the pink emergency card.  Those persons must show ID to have the student released to them.

Safety First

It seems everyone is in a hurry these days! We must, however, for the sake of safety for ALL of our students, keep our heads! Please pay attention to the following:

1.  Arrive at school early enough so as to not rush the process of safely dropping off! There is supervision at 7:50, so dropping off a little early will help alleviate the traffic crowd at 8:03.

2.  If dropping off in front of the school or in the Little League lot, pull forward as far as you can.  Do not get out of your car, and keep moving forward.

3.  When picking up your child, PARK! Don't double park and have your child run between cars to get to you.  Better to be safe than sorry, PLUS you will teach your child to think of safety first instead of taking risks that could result in injury.

4. Do not pull in the driveway after 7:45.  It is a bus lane then.

Grace Miller Employees of the Year

We would like to congratulate Sarah Story as Grace Miller Teacher of the Year and Sue Boscarino as Grace Miller Classified Employee of the Year.

Mrs. Story has been a teacher for over 40 years.  Most recently, she has been the Intervention Teacher at Grace Miller School, helping students in grades K-4 to become better readers.  She has learned 5 new intervention programs and has had a lot of success.  Prior to that, she taught 1st grade and kindergarten here at GM.

Mrs. Boscarino is the Grace Miller site supervisor for School-aged Care.  She has been at Grace Miller for 9 years and runs a quality, safe program.  She is loved by all of the students that she serves and is a great supporting member of our staff.

Both of these ladies go above and beyond what is expected and give their hearts to the kids at our school.  We appreciate all that they do!
